ABSTRACT:
This investigation delves into the factors that influence substance use among secondary school and college students and assesses the effectiveness of an Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) program in tackling substance abuse. A quasi-experimental design with pre- and post-tests was employed, selecting 60 students aged 14-18 from Choudwar, Odisha, through systematic random sampling. Data collection involved a structured knowledge questionnaire and an attitude scale, administered before and after the IEC program, which featured lectures, discussions, audiovisual materials, and interactive activities. Initial assessments revealed that 75% of participants had inadequate knowledge regarding substance use. Post-intervention, 86.7% demonstrated good knowledge levels. The mean knowledge score increased significantly from 9.90(pre-test) to 25.17 (post-test) (p<0.001). A strong correlation was found between maternal occupations and initial attitudes, while the relationship between post-test knowledge and attitudes was moderate. The IEC program significantly improved adolescents' knowledge and attitudes toward substance abuse, as evidenced by the substantial increase in pre- and post-intervention test scores. Test scores increased significantly pre- and post-intervention after the IEC program enhanced teenagers' substance abuse knowledge and attitudes. Structured educational activities improve teenage substance addiction awareness, with statistically significant findings.
