A Descriptive Study to Assess the Knowledge on Stress Management among Staff Nurses at Sri Manakula Vinayagar Medical College and Hospital Kalitheerthalkuppam

ABSTRACT:
Stress is a physical or emotional state of response always present in a personal as a result of living it is intensified in a non specific response to an internal or external environmental change or threat. stress is frequently described as “ the black plaque of the eighties or the modern epidemic has become an important feature and major problem of everyday life threatening individual organization and social health. Numerous studies have indicated that job stress is significant in nursing, it was found that job stress brought about hazardous impacts not only as nurses health but also their abilities to cope with job demands. this will seriously impair the provision of quality care and efficacy of health services delivery further more professional stress has been found to be one of the major work related health problems. Therefore it is important to understand how work associated stress affects nurses and what factors in their working environment cause the greatest burden. it is also of great importance to gain more knowledge of nurses working condition, occupational stress it management, knowledge that might be used to decrease nurses. professional stress and increase their stress managing abilities.

INTRODUCTION:
NEED FOR THE STUDY
Nurses play an important role in the health team along with other health professional. she strives for the prevention of disease, promotion of health and prolonging the life of individual and the community. she works at patient level, doctor level and administration level in this setting she faced lot of physical and psychological stress. in India nurses are over burdened as the nurse to patient ratio is low 1: 2250.
Studies have revealed also that stress is the most common health problem attributed to long work hours and the incidence of stress due to overwork is growing [Lehmkuhl, 1999; Dehaas, 1998]. The United Nations realized the magnitude of this problem as it has labeled job related stress as 20th century disease [Krohe, 1999]. A very large percentage (87.4%) of Indian nurses reported stress in the present study. However the high level’s work stress was found in 32.2% nurses which is similar to a survey conducted in 2005 on 314, 900 Canadian nurses where 31% of nurses reported high work stress other studies have also found a similar stress levels.
OBJECTIVES:
· To assess the knowledge on stress management among staff nurses at SMVMCH Kalitheerthalkuppam.
· To compare the knowledge on stress management among staff nurses with selected demographic variables.
METHODOLOGY:
Research Approach: The research approach used for this study was quantitative approach.
Research Design: The research design selected for this study was Descriptive design.
Population: The target Population selected for the study compromises of all the staff nurses who residing at SMVMCH.
Sample: The samples of the present study consist of 50 staff nurses who are working at SMVMCH.
Sampling Technique: Sampling technique adopted for the study was convenient sampling technique.
Criteria for Sample Selection:
Inclusion Criteria:
1. Nurses who are working at SMVMCH.
2. Nurse who are willing to participate.
3. Nurses who have been education qualification of Bsc nursing and general nursing midwifery.
Exclusion Criteria:
1. Nurse who are not understanding Tamil and English
2. Nurse who are not willing to participate.
3. Nurses who are not qualification of Bsc nursing and general nursing midwifery.
Description of The Instrument:
The instrument consists of two parts.
Part -I: Demographic Data:
Socio demographic data consists age, religion, educational status, marital status, family income, type of family, experience, ward.
Part-II: To Assess Stress Managemnent Among Staff Nurses:
· It is used to assess the knowledge on stress management
· It assessment of knowledge questionnaire consists of 10.

Reliability of The Tool:
The investigator checked the reliability of the tool was elicited by Inter-rater reliability. The tool was moderately reliable.
FINDING OF THE STUDY:
· Highest percentage 88.3% of staff nurses were in the age group of 36-40 years. highest percentage of 80% were in the educational status of diploma in general midwifery
· Overall knowledge mean percentage of the staff nurse 77.86% score revealing adequate knowledge on stress management
· Comparison between knowledge score in relation to demographic variables shows that the staff nurses in the age group of 36-40 years obtained highest score 88.3% the lowest mean score (76%) were from staff nurses in the age group of 26-30 years.
· Education wise comparison of highest mean knowledge score is 80%. from diploma in general midwifery, lowest mean score in 75% was obtained by B.Sc nursing staff nurse.
· Experience wise comparison of highest mean knowledge score is 81% from 11-20 years experienced staff nurse and lowest mean score is 79% was obtained by staff nurses in the experience year of less than 5 years.
RESULT:
This descriptive study reveals that among 50 staff nurses 70% of them had moderate adequate knowledge. 14% of staff nurse were adequate knowledge.16% of staff nurse were having inadequate knowledge on stress management
CONCLUSION:
The study concluded that 36-40 years of staff nurse had good mean score, majority of them were experience, educational status reveals that degree staff nurse had good mean percentage. overall staff nurse had good knowledge of exercise, yoga for stress management, and also diet management and it is observed that staff nurses had moderate adequate knowledge and awareness on stress management.
